200,000 Killed for Peace (Hiroshima)
Many of us know the city of Hiroshima as the city that was eradicated by mankind’s first atomic bomb that claimed the lives of an estimated 200,000 people. Today, I visited the site and surrounding monuments of the hypocenter. Out of all attractions I’ve been to in my lifetime, this one hits home in my heart. You can see local residents visit this site and continue to pray for peace and to their loved ones. Being in proximity of this tragic event spurs my feelings on humanity. We are so capable and conscious of doing these things to our own kind. In the wrong hands, we as a race and even planet can cease to exist. Present day, its in the hands of many. There are about 8,000 active warheads on this planet with Russia leading with more than half the amount. The City of Hiroshima has made it clear that this site is to be preserved forever. Reminding the world of the tremendous power of nuclear weapons and its capacity. I’m hoping that spells out the exclusion of nuclear weapons in war to our leaders.
I’ve posted a few pictures that I have taken today of the few buildings that survived the blast along with some before and after models of the city. The most important pictures to me are the artifacts from the blast such as clothing, bottles, toys, etc. It was someone’s belongings and the condition it was in tells me that the owner was violently injured and likely killed. I’m withholding some of the more graphic photographs, but it’s something you should definitely see in your lifetime.
I usually don’t link music, but I think it’s appropriate for this one.
Imagine – John Lennon (Performed by Lea Michele, Glee)
